*This is a crosspost between another blog I'm a part of and this one but I wanted to post these up in a sequence together.

These are 1 hour digital painting studies I've been painting for the past week or so. They were all from photographs I took this summer in the states. My main focus here is to get faster, more efficient and nice colours.

The large waterfall one is the most recent from tonight, and I have to say the improvement of my brushwork is showing!

Sometimes I feel like I have a billion personalities, and I want to try my hand at everything, everything technique and every medium... While that's fun and all, I sometimes find it hard to organize my work together into a cohesive representation of my body of work.

My entry for the scribble contest on DA is getting pretty out of hand ahha. Incorporating some graphic elements to my illustrations, so they're less fully of... stuff. The key to success here is knowing what not to paint rather than knowing what to paint.

I'm really digging how the waves are turning out. This is my first time trying this "illustrator's colour palate" (you know, the pinks, magenta, turquoise, orange AKA disney palate lol)
I have a real problem with adding too much black or desaturated/muted colours while shading, so I'm trying to step back on that :/ dunno if it's working ; A ;

A really late night doodle when I was trying to figure out what to do for another painting. Ended up staring at John Klassen's work for a good minute. Trying new things again, I think I've been limiting myself for a while when it comes to digital painting. I used to be very interested in graphic design as I'm always drawn to things that appear simplistic, symbolic and bold, but I can never create anything that has those attributes -or i can never fulfill those attributes the right way. This doodle took about 2 hours from sketch to finish-ish, and all in one sitting. Which makes it my most productive piece to date haha, I almost can never finish anything in 1 sitting.

Anyhow, I'll share with you the beauty of Klassen's work now. Here are some of his work that I really love. The most striking quality of his body of work to me is his colour pallet. His colours are serious, but aren't all desaturated or in just monochromatic schemes. Colours are something I generally have a lot of trouble with.

Extra-life sketch-bomb! [lots-o-photos]

I signed up for extra life drawing sessions during the summer at school, so here's some of the ones I liked. It's nice drawing without portfolio stress once in a while haha. These are all really chill once a week sessions.

Looking at these though, I really need to continue working on showing more structure in my figures, use less ridiculously curvy lines, and try to draw better torsos from the front view -if you look carefully, most of these are poses facing away from me HAHA. Also feet. I can't draw feet without making them look weird ahha. I do think I have improved a bit since school ended, which is a plus :D But my style certainly has changed a lot. In my last life drawing post, I drew with more angular lines in a really sharp fashion, now I think it grew a little softer I'm paying more attention to muscles.

Phew, so now that this massive art post is over, so how's your summer been? :)

All-tar, original idea is a visual representation of my mental state when I heard about a murder/robbery case on the corner of my street a month or two ago, and then I revisited NAM's art work on their website....

I just love the way the stillness of time is captured through these photographs, and how there's a sense of chaos and mystery to everyday objects. (I'm also in love with the music on their website ; A ; they're old track and this new one!) I took these two screen caps of the the art pieces about a year ago, and still search for them on my computer to look at in my spare time. Which lead to the result of my All-tar painting haha.

Looking at other people's work and the world around you helps an artist grow their idea bank. When I look at other's work, I like to interpret their ideas in my own way and sketch some doodles relating to their body of work. I think of this as a visual conversation I have with that person. They will probably never see my side of the conversation, but I think it's a neat idea that visual art can have physical responses as well as internal.

Some doodling around on my painting. I wanted to have objects that feel like they are connected to "family" and "home" so I picked chairs (dinning table), potatos, kitchen knife, fish, ants, spoons, forks, and tree roots. The skull is a hint I guess. This painting still relates to that murder/robbery near my house.

Back Story:
a man stole a tank of gas at a station on my street. He then drove over the head of the gas station attendant when he was being stopped . This occurred at approx 5pm, I took a bus to the mall at 4:40pm… the bus shelter was right beside that gas station. The police haven’t caught the guy yet, since his license plate was covered…
I was really scared to drive or walk outside of my house…

So I really wanted to submit something to Ballistic Publishing's books, like a while back in Feb or so, I wanted to try for their Expose series, but then due to time constraints and low esteem, I didn't have the guts to submit anything...

This time around, it's for their Exotique series, but I'm still really unsure if I have what it takes to make it in... They're asking for beautiful characters, and from what I've seen, if I wanted to get in, I'd have to paint super realist super-model faces. But I really don't want to, since it's not my thing.... but I want to get in... aah D:

Out of frustration I speedpainted two more things today. Oh and the deadline for the book submissions is in a week or so :(

I'm super frustrated between painting stylized and realist, I think I'll just paint both ways like Picasso or something TT_TT
(on a happier note, I did start using a new brush today that allows me to paint beautiful soft edges without looking too fuzzy, both of these paintings were done only in that brush)

Absolutely forever in love with Anish Kapoor's sculptures, this speed paint was inspired by his piece titled "Mother as a Mountain" and also studying intense colours.
I discovered my information file from gr 12 art, and found a whole bunch of clippings from art magazines, one of which was an article featuring Kapoor. I miss looking at art.

Time to subscribe to magazines again, ah my poor wallet :(

Hey guys here's some more work I've been... worrrrrrrkinggg on since a month ago when Anime Expo happened and I got stuck in LA after loosing my passport. I'm back and safe and fine now, and have a new passport :)

These new piece I've been experimenting with form, structure and new painting/colouring methods.

While I was in LA I had the fantastic opportunity to meet many Sheridan graduates, whom I've respected for a long time, among them were students from illustration. After talking to them, and seeing their work, I realized that I was quite interested in what they do.


Struggle of the Gods

So with these new pieces, I've decided to try something new. For starters, I was always thinking that my work had to be realist-style, that everything needed to be rendered in a way to make it look like it could exist in real life. This inhibited me so much from painting the things I love to draw (things that were hard to render in real life lol). So now, I've come to accept 2D as a valuable aesthetic in my work... and thus "speech bubbles" was born. :)

I also wanted to paint with a different touch so my paintings didn't look like plastic models or lacked depth. I guess I am just trying out a bunch of new brushes right now to experiment with, and ended up liking a layering/glazing effect. It really takes forever but I like it in it's own way!

Finally finished this painting. I'm still not satisfied with it, but parts of it shows my rendering abilities so far, and I like the face a lot. But geeezus, green is so sickening now, and painting forests is becoming a "safe route" for me. I'm going to try to switch it up and not paint jungles or forests for a while!

After I got home today, for whatever reason, inspiration hit me like a rabbit on a highway. BAM and then I found myself drawing a Hanya mask and woman. lol. I really like it so far, the background was inspired by traditional Chinese water/brush paintings/Japanese Sumi-e? paintings.

Death do us part: painting realization

Here's a 30-40 minute speed paint of my idea for the next layout project. Small vs Big
My concept was something like a physical manisfestation of Death and how although the loss of another is heartwrenching, it's something that cannot be stopped nor should it be something that is frightful. TBH I honestly was just doodling some random monsters, and this one was the one I liked most.
In the picture, the girl is pulling another person (mother/friend) from Death's chest/hair/mane. But I didn't want her to hate him either, which is why he's holding her tenderly. I guess it was more like a moral struggle between the two? something like the iron giant.

Anyhow, I've also realized that when I paint traditionally, I layer and put alot of focus and thought in the entire process (beginning to end) from composition to final details. However, once I start painting using photoshop or painter, I completely forget about my own personal method of painting with layers and resort to techniques that take much longer for me to complete pictures (alot of time spent on useless details). I just don't exert my brain when I paint digitally, and as a result, I don't learn as much with every passing painting. It's like auto-pilot mode. LOL

Lesson learned: When digital painting, repeat the same process you would paint with using traditional medium. Only incorporate more detailed rendering and other process until I can digital paint as well I can/as fast as I can using traditional medium.

Here's a post on my painting/drafting process. It involves alot of random changes to the environment. I usually start off with lines, just doodling etc. Here's my initial sketch, of a girl, drowning? (but her hair is.. not floating IDUNO.) k moving on.

-her hair is a mobius. i thought it was neato, but sometimes it's good to save neato ideas for their own neato pictures. *adds this to the vault*

And then final er composition? and maybe colour scheme. picture is still evolving. lets hope i can nurture it into something great :)

*this is also called, screw it, I'll revert to something safe. like, a jungle or trees. yes. foliage = less perspective and more mindless auto pilot detailed rendering

I'll try to finish this along with "Fairy Queen" that is, if my imac doesn't implode on me, the finder is like freezing atm -oh, and I've just restarted everything.

Derping around with hair and face LOL I really do want to one day cg a humanly accurate proportioned face, but I just can't bring myself to stray away from my ideals. Ahh baby faced girls with huge foreheads, doe eyes, round lips and tiny noses. It's just so nice looking, but as of now my knowlege of planes on the human face is lacking orz. Hopefully I'll learn it later this semester when we do more portraits in life drawing class : D
I can think in planes when it comes to hair or clothing or any other objects except for the face and thighs... time to do more studying, perhaps actually purchasing anatomy books will be the first step lol.

Second semester is off to a great start! I'm doing well in all my classes, I have great stuff in my sketchbook and have found a good niche at school to just relax and hang out with. =3= I can now geek out with out fear! huzzay! LOL
I'll scan more drawings from my books eventually, and update with some life drawing too :)

btw I make my own bento lunch everyday! lost 5 pounds, have good sleep, and thinner legs now and made a very good lifestyle schedule! 2011 seems to be a great year so far!

Another wip shot of Fairy Queen!~ I'm actually getting quite attached to this piece :) i'm going to paint bits at a time, and actually reference this time! lol I want to really polish this one up, so don't expect alot of other work for a bit. It seems jungle/nature bgs are my favourite to paint because of all the many different shadows and objects in it.

first time D&D, I enjoyed it. MY FRIENDS ARE COOL. He wrote awesome story, i like how they play more story oriented :D it's interesting as the journey folds out! Great ideas for comics and such LOL. OTL -NERD- But yea, I was half painting and half playing, all while enjoying the awesome fantasy-ambience music friend put on through skype (friends in NYC so damn far away `A`)

I find that the right kind of music really gets me into good painting sessions :D But I'm a girl of many different tastes! so like. If I listen to santogold/deadmaus/80kidz/daftpunk/ my artwork looks more like this:

Fairy Queen +obtained armour

Update 01.05.11: Added orange fungi for warm accents, the majority of the forest is mapped out. I'm approaching this painting quite differently than my usual ones. For one. I actually have a battle plan to follow LOL. It lies in the fudamental rule of painting the bg first. I'm liking how pale the fairy queen's skin is in comparison to all the deeply saturated colours of her surroundings. At this point, I'm not too sure about the additional fairy servants. Once they're toned in, it'll probably act as several other focal points, which will distract from the face of the large fairy queen. :\

oh wat do. I'm pretty satisfied with the bg so far. But GODDAMN my imac's opperating system is too old for CS5 (and live stream programs) fffffff so i'm still chugging along with my ancient painter 3. Experimented with watercolour layers and oil colours and pastels all in the tree bark/lineart/shadows. And I finally learned how to "merge" layers using that blasted program =_=

Fanexpoop the Fail-con

So this year was my first time at Fanexpo, and I gotta say they messed up big time! With famous people like Stan Lee and Adam West coming this year and moving to the smaller North side, they didn't anticipate nearly as much people that showed up. They just kept selling tickets when obviously (from the huge line ups outside) there was no room for that many people. It got so bad that the fire marshals and security had to regulate who goes in and comes out. If you left the convention center to get lunch, you had to line up 2 hours to get back in. This made the people already inside want to stay in and enjoy the facilities therefore less people could get in, even in line. Aside from this screw up, Fanex was pretty fun since I stayed at the Intercontinental (attached to con) and cosplayed with awesome friends. We were the Super Sailor Scouts at the con and we were a huge hit (or atleast from the amount of photos taken of us in just 8 hours). Here's my finished mercury cosplay and here's a video of our night time photoshoot.

worked on the green one yesterday then got distracted by a photo of Asuka's figurine on Dannychoooooo. I spent much longer painting the green one but it doesn't show (when viewing larger versions) compared to Asuka's awesomeness. Orz These are both in WIP stages. not close to finishing....

I think with every painting I start, I improve a little. But this just means I want to constantly start things and never finish anything....... OTL my personal quote haunts me inside...

Digital painting is so much fun lol. I've discovered that I'm really indecisive, never ever ever let me show you the process of my paintings. I brainstorm on the spot, and what's left in the painting is only 20% of all the nonsense and editing before it's finished. I can only imagine how much of a fail it'd be if I were to livestream lol!

WIP, I'll let it rot on my desktop a while before picking up again :/
